Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) là thành viên của một nhóm điệp viên thuộc IMF – lực lượng chuyên thực thi những nhiệm vụ bất khả thi. Dưới sự phân công của Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), nhóm này tới Prague nhằm ngăn chặn vụ đánh cắp một chiếc đĩa có bản danh sách tên những điệp viên hàng đầu thế giới và cả thông tin về cuộc đời thực của họ. Công việc vẫn tiến triển theo kế hoạch bình thường cho đến khi cả nhóm bị rơi vào ổ phục kích và chỉ còn Ethan sống sót.
Sau đó Ethan tới gặp chỉ huy thượng cấp Kittridge (Henry Czerny), ông cho anh biết trong hàng ngũ IMF có một kẻ phản bội và chính kẻ này đã đem bí mật bán trên chợ đen. Nhưng người ta lại nghi ngờ Ethan vì anh là người duy nhất thoát khỏi cuộc tấn công nọ và khai trừ tư cách làm điệp viên của Ethan. Anh buộc phải trốn thoát, tìm một thành viên khác của đội cũng sống sót như anh, đó là Claire (Emmanuelle Beart). Để chứng minh sự trong sạch của mình, Ethan và Claire cộng tác với những điệp viên bị khai trừ khác nhằm truy ra tung tích kẻ phản bội và tìm kiếm chiếc đĩa đã bị đánh cắp.

Ethan phải bỏ dở lễ cưới để đi tìm Lindsey Farris. Cứu được Lindsey khỏi tay kẻ bắt cóc, nhưng Ethan không thể giành lại cô từ tay thần chết.
